Mahjong Garden
Badge tips Be aware of the 8 minute time limit for Planting Seeds, the one day time limit for Weather Dragon and Rock Garden, and the four hour time limit for Pink Dragon! Be sure to select the correct difficulty level and/or tile set and/or puzzle layouts when specified for a badge! For badges requiring specific tile sets, if you're more comfortable using the traditional tiles (or a different set), you can play using the tile set you like. Then when you've got around ten tiles left to match, switch to the Pogo Tiles set and you will still receive credit. Note there's no guarantee this glitch will continue to work. For badges requiring you match Season or Flower tiles, be sure to match them exactly! Each tile set has one pair each of four seasons (and four flowers), but they have different looks in some sets. Use Undo if you inadvertently click away non-matching seasons (or flowers) for these badges. For "celebrate birthdays" badges, you only have to complete the Boar (12th/last puzzle) for each birthday. For future "birthday" challenges, you can work thru the zodiac and complete the Dog (11th puzzle) by the Tuesday night before the challenge. Then you'll just have to do one puzzle to get your challenge underway on Wednesday! For Spring Delight you can save two Spring tiles until you've matched or clicked away all other season tiles, or if you match Spring tiles early in the game, you can mis-match the remaining season tiles to keep the game "in Spring". Do the same for Monkey See, Monkey Fu, but with Autumn tiles. Activating the Kiss 'n Spin or Plums 'n Mums badges after completing the Rabbit (4th puzzle) will help ensure a successful start to your challenge as the Dragon & Snake (5th & 6th puzzles) are the easiest. Be sure to select the appropriate difficulty setting for your badge! Similarly, for badges requiring tokens, up the difficulty level when you do the Dragon & Snake, and lower it if needed for the Rat, Rooster, or others you have trouble with so you can complete them faster. Note this tip refers to the classic Animals layouts. Note the above tips refer to the classic Animals layouts. For the new Temple layouts, the Dragon (5th puzzle) still seems easiest but the Snake (6th puzzle) is a little harder than it was. For Red Dragon's Badge, Red Dragon tiles have either a red rectangle with a red vertical line or a red dragon, depending which tile set you use. There are two (one pair) in each game. Although the badge wording says match 50 tiles implying 25 matches, this one actually requires 50 matches (100 tiles). For Stress-free Sanctuary, Green Dragon tiles have either a green Chinese character or a green dragon, depending which tile set you use. There are two (one pair) in each game. For this one, you need to make 20 matches (40 tiles). For White Dragon's Badge, White Dragon tiles have either a blank rectangle or a white dragon, depending which tile set you use. There are two (one pair) in each game. For this one, you need to make 25 matches (50 tiles). For speedy Red Dragon's or Stress-free Sanctuary badges, if you aren't interested in making rank progress, you can hit Undo after matching a pair of Red (or Green) Dragons, then match them again and again. If you lose count, you can hit New Game after matching some Dragon pairs. Note: there's no guarantee this glitch will continue to work. You'll earn badges requiring tokens a bit faster by playing on medium or hard, matching all seasons in each game, and by completing each puzzle quickly. Pause the timer if you get distracted during a game when working on a tokens badge. The Squelchies Playing Mahjong Weekend and Pogo 10 Year Anniversary Weekend badges are only available during the dates shown above. Special Edition badges can't be activated as personal challenges. For game win badges, refer to Game tips. Game tips ALWAYS read a game's How to Play, and also check for a Hints or Tips tab and/or Tutorial. They do help! Until you're familiar with the game & tiles, think of available tiles as being those that aren't under others, and are free to "slide out" to either side. Available tiles show a green border highlight when moused over. Work on clearing the tallest stacks and the longest strings of left-right tiles first. If you have three of a kind available, click away the two that will free up the most tiles. The Rooster (classic/Animals layout) causes the most problems for most players, but if you concentrate on chipping away the upper left section, you'll have a better chance at completing it. The Rooster usually ends up with the last 20-30 tiles lined up in nearby pairs in the area that represents the top of its tail (refer to the Rooster stone at the top of the game.) Every puzzle is solvable. If you get stuck, you can use the Undo button (or right click) to undo one move at a time all the way back to the beginning of a game. Hitting New Game>Reset Puzzle also starts the same puzzle over, but with Undo you can watch to see where you clicked away matches for the tiles that stumped you. You don't have unlimited hints in a game so use the Hint and Show All buttons carefully. Be aware these buttons impose a time penalty, and they don't always suggest the best move(s). More about Mahjong Garden A download/pay version of this game, Mahjong Garden Deluxe, launched in September 2007 with three play versions and its own rank badges and mini sets. Each zodiac of 12 puzzles equals one "age" for your dragon. Each rank has a new graphic representing the dragon's stage of life, from an egg through old age. After 450, your dragon will continue to age but will remain at In the Game Room rank. The animal stones across the top light up to track your progress through the zodiac, regardless of which tile or layout set you use. Any flower tile can be matched with any other, and unmatched flowers count the same as matched. Season tiles can also be mixed & matched, but you get a token and graphic bonus if you match them exactly. Right-click works to Undo in this game. This game ranks up relatively fast early on but slows down midway. It takes a lot of time & dedication to win the final badge: figure that each zodiac takes about an hour (based on an average of five minutes per puzzle). If your tiles disappear after pausing or minimizing, dragging your mouse across the game board area should bring them back. Seven new tile sets, an additional layout set (Temples), and five new Game Award badges were added to this game in March 2007. When the upgrade came along for this game, new Game Award badges weren't showing up for those who had previously earned the required ranks for them, and although game stats were correct, everyone's dragon showed Zero ages after finishing a puzzle - oops! They seem to have worked the bugs out now. The upgrade also removed previous glitches that kept a lot of tiles visible when you hit New Game rather than Pause, and one that let you switch difficulty levels quickly when finishing a puzzle (which helped for badges requiring wins on Hard). The original classic tiles in this game are similar to traditional tiles but with the upgrade, Pogo added a more purely traditional tile set along with the others they added. Computer mahjong (aka mahjongg or mah-jongg) is usually a tile-removing solitaire game like Mahjong Garden, but traditionally it's a 4-player competitive game involving melds of matched suits. Mahjong championship tournaments are held around the world. The game was invented in China, probably around 1850. It was hugely popular in the US and UK in the 1920s, partly due to a book by Joseph Park Babcock (Rules of Mah-Jongg) and a hit song of the day by Eddie Cantor, "Since Ma is Playing Mah Jong". It's often a gambling game - the dot, bamboo (bams) and character (craks) tiles represent money - but ironically the game was banned in China when the People's Republic was founded in 1949, along with all forms of gambling. Club Pogo also has a mahjong-inspired word game, WordJong. Thanks to sov6plus2, fey222, GardenParty123, and AKILLERINSTINCTP for submitting additional Mahjong Garden tips! |
